US parcels giant FedEx saw third quarter revenues up four per cent to $11.7bn.
“We had a very successful peak season as volumes grew across all transportation segments, and our profit improvement programs are moving ahead as scheduled,” said Fred Smith, FedEx Corp chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Operating results for the third quarter ended February 28 improved due to volume and base yield growth in all three transportation segments of ground, freight and express.
There was also a “significant net benefit” from fuel, benefits from profit improvement program initiatives, a lower year-over-year weather impact and reduced pension expense.
These improvements were partially offset by higher variable incentive compensation accruals.

DHL has opened a service centre facility in Houston, Texas, mainly to serve the oil and gas sector.
The $2.5m, 28,000 sq ft facility can process more than 2,500 shipments per hour, nearly double the existing capacity and will allow for earlier delivery times and later drop off times.
DHL Express says it has seen an uptick in emergency shipping of machinery parts and replacement tools.
The facility will handle anything from international small parcels to palletised and container freight.
The new facility is to the west of the city centre. DHL Express also has a Service Center north of the city in Humble, Texas, an aircraft ramp at George Bush Intercontinental Airport and its US Customer Finance Support Center.

UPS customers can now ship biological substances, dangerous goods in excepted quantities and shipments using dry ice to more than 20 additional international destinations.
The US-based global express and logistics’ operator says that the expansion is a direct response to a growing demand from biopharmaceutical manufacturers, diagnostics companies, laboratories and distributors.  
“The UPS global transportation network has been enhanced to move biological specimens to and from more than 50 countries around the world,” said John Menna, UPS vice president of global strategy, healthcare logistics.
“The expanded programme was guided by our customers to include the locations that are most important to them.”
UPS is now able to pick up and deliver packages under regulation UN3373 (Biologic Substances, Category B, Diagnostic Specimen and Clinical Specimen) as well as UN1845 (Carbon Dioxide, solid or dry ice) in Australia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Panama, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey and Ukraine.
UN3373 and UN1845 are guidelines issued by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to regulate the safe transportation of goods using air transportation modes.

Thomas Lieb, management board chairman of Schenker AG, will leave the German logistics company at the end of this month “by best mutual agreement”.
The 56 year-old will take on new responsibilities outside the German railway parent company, Deutsche Bahn Group.
Dr Lieb has resigned “immediately” as head of business unit at DB Schenker Logistics and as management board chairman of Schenker AG, the company said in a statement, adding that Dr Lieb and DB group had decided this “by best mutual agreement”.
Karl-Friedrich Rausch, member of the management board of DB Mobility Logistics, responsible for transportation and logistics, said: “Dr Lieb achieved a lot for DB Schenker.
“Under his leadership the Business Unit DB Schenker Logistics enlarged its global network of today 2,000 locations in more than 140 countries and became a leading provider of global transportation and logistics solutions as well in future markets.”
In late February, Deutsche Bahn dismissed a claim for damages against three airlines in its billion dollar lawsuit relating to an air cargo cartel between 1999 and 2006.
DB added at the time: “Schenker will continue to pursue its claims against other air carriers and seek damages relating to the air carriers’ anti-competitive conduct alleged in the US cartel lawsuit, based on the legal principle of joint and several liability. Schenker plans to pursue its rights vigorously.”
Until a decision about Dr Lieb’s succession is made, Lutz Freytag, member of the management board of Schenker AG for finance/controlling, will take over the position as  management board chairman of Schenker AG on an interim basis.

TNT has launched a Monday to Friday B737-400F service between Israeli capital Tel Aviv and the express operator's European hub in Liege, Belgium.
The new service "answers increasing demand" and allows TNT to shorten transit times for express shipments to and from Tel Aviv by one day.
The flight arrives in Tel Aviv in the morning for same day deliveries, and departs in the evening, allowing for close of business pick up and same day export
Martin Sodergard, managing director network operations at TNT, said: "With this flight operated by TNT, our customers will benefit from improved delivery reliability, as well as later cut-off times for pick-ups thanks to improved departure times.
"It also gives us additional capacity to further grow our business in and out of Israel.”
The European Union is the first trading partner for Israel, with total trade amounting to approximately €29bn in 2013. 
Typical TNT shipments to and from Israel include machinery, electronic products, medical equipment and textiles
Under the company’s outlook strategy, TNT is working to combine its European road network with a stronger international air network.
TNT has recently upgraded its road express services to Turkey and the Balkan countries, and added Hannover and Venice to the European air network.

Panalpina is adding a B747-400 freighter service to São Paulo, Brazil, aimed at manufacturers of heavy machinery and equipment for agriculture and mining.
The direct service from US hub Huntsville to São Paulo, called Brazil Wings, has been designed for customers in the mid-west and in parts of the s south eastern US.
As of March, global forwarder Panalpina will operate scheduled charter flights from Hong Kong to its Huntsville and from Huntsville to São Paulo.
The extended service is part of the renewed long-term agreement between Switzerland-headquartered Panalpina and ACMI lessor Atlas Air. It offers scheduled main deck capacity to South America from the US and a transit time of less than 40 hours from Hong Kong to São Paulo.
“Our customers in the US have a need for fast and efficient connections to Brazil. The new set-up with Atlas Air, where we switched one of our wet-leased aircraft to 200 scheduled charters per year, allows us to meet this demand effectively,” explains Lucas Kuehner, global head of Air Freight at Panalpina.
As of March 3, Panalpina will initially operate two flights per week from Huntsville to Viracopos airport, São Paulo, with dedicated scheduled charters using Atlas Air B747-400 freighters.
Roberto Schiavone, head of air freight for the region Americas at Panalpina, says: “The new service is tailored to companies that manufacture heavy machines and equipment for agriculture and mining.
“Brazil, with its large agricultural and mining industries, is an interesting market for these companies, but getting the goods there can be challenging. So far, the companies had to export via large, congested airports with limited freighter capacity.
Schiavone adds: “We offer an alternative – scheduled main deck capacity to Brazil from an uncongested airport that puts high priority on cargo.
“Export cargo can be easily trucked to our unique air freight gateway in Huntsville. There we offer an airside facility and short distances. This allows for fast expediting and full control on the ground. In addition, customers benefit from cargo consolidation and customs clearance services.”
Panalpina provides daily road feeder services from more than ten major US cities to Huntsville. From the Chicago area, with its important manufacturing base, transport to Huntsville takes as little as 16 hours. Panalpina also manages import customs clearance and delivery to the final destination in Brazil.
The freighter flights from Huntsville to São Paulo connect with the freighter flights coming in from Hong Kong.
“We can fly cargo from Hong Kong to Viracopos via Huntsville in less than 40 hours,” says Matthias Frey, global head of Panalpina’s controlled air freight network.

Swedish truck and bus maker Volvo has renewed a three-year contract with express operator TNT for ‘inbound to production’ and aftermarket delivery services in Europe.
TNT will continue to handle Volvo’s European emergency production movements.
TNT collects automotive components and parts from more than 800 different suppliers in Europe and delivers them to production facilities in Sweden, Belgium, France and Poland.
“The service builds on TNT’s integrated road and air network in Europe. It combines scheduled and special services to ensure all production delivery needs are met,” said the express company.
It added: “The need to maintain low inventory levels while keeping assembly lines running smoothly make guaranteed reliable deliveries essential. TNT provides a door-to-door transit monitoring service for shipments from its Automotive Control Centres, with 24/7 availability.”
Under the contract, TNT handles parts distribution to Volvo dealers throughout Europe to support Volvo’s aftermarket offering. Most parts are collected at Volvo’s central or support warehouses in Europe.
Another contract sees TNT managing the delivery of parts from suppliers in Europe to Volvo Trucks’ manufacturing plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, US.
TNT said that its ‘Inbound to Production’ and aftermarket services will be available to more customers in the automotive, high tech and industrial sectors in 2015.

Iraqi ground-handler Azmar Air has gone live with Kale’s Galaxy International air cargo management system.
Azmar, based at Sulaymaniyah International Airport in the Kurdish-controlled region of northern Iraq will use the system for e-freight compliance, warehouse management and vehicle management, and it will be able to offer real-time updates to customers’ trade partners and EDI messaging, says Indian-based Kale.
It added that Galaxy is already in use by handlers including Bahrain Airport Services, Mumbai International Airport and leading international airports in India, plus Lusaka and Ndola in Zambia amongst others.
Indrajit Marath, Azmar’s general manager- cargo village said: “We are now able to automatically capture all data, do better flight planning and plan the operations in advance.
“Our customers including airlines, forwarders, GSAs are happy to see online updates and track shipments. More importantly, we attained this without having to increase our staff count.”

DHL's Resilience360 risk management tool can now be integrated with customer's transport management systems, allowing them to view shipments affected by disruptive incidents.
Customers can then scan the latest position and status of all their shipments worldwide and identify corrective actions.
Recent incidents monitored by Resilience 360 included the ash cloud from the Bardarbunga Volcano, the economic fall-out from Russian sanctions and the Ebola crisis.
In the case of the volcano, Resilience360’s near real-time information and global mapping device made it possible for customers to anticipate and avert knock-on disruptions elsewhere in the supply chain, such as flight disruptions in other regions, says DHL.
Resilience360's new country-specific risk page also gives with an overview of supply chain risk scores and incident trends, together with a free weekly supply chain risk intelligence bulletin.
Resilience360 is described by DHL as an end-to-end supply chain risk management platform that alerts customers about global incidents and risks to their global supply chain in almost real time, allowing customers to respond immediately to incidents and pre-empt or minimise business interruption.

UPS reported “flat” fourth quarter earnings in the fourth quarter of 2014 compared with the same period in prior year. In fact, earnings per share, at $1.25, were identical to 2013, said the US-based express carrier.
It blamed higher than expected peak operating expenses in its home market as the carrier sought to maintain delivery times - UPS delivered 1.3bn packages during the fourth quarter, an increase of 8.1 per cent over the same period last year.
"UPS customers were delighted with the high quality service we delivered during the holiday season," said chief executive officer, David Abney. "However, the financial results were below our expectations.” He promised to “address this disparity with both cost and revenue actions" in 2015.
International revenue, on a currency-neutral basis, increased 5.9 per cent to $3.4bn – although currency fluctuations took $40m off this figure compared with 2013 - with 4.3 per cent growth in daily package volume.
Export shipments were up 5.2 per cent, driven primarily by 8.5 per cent growth from Europe, offset somewhat by a decline in Asia export volume. Non-U.S. domestic products were up 3.6 per cent with strong growth in Canada, Spain and Mexico.
Export yield contracted 1.7 per cent on a currency-neutral basis, as a result of lower fuel surcharges, product mix and stronger intra-regional shipment growth.
Revenue in the supply chain and freight segment increased 7.4 per cent to$2.5bn, with growth in distribution and UPS Freight.
Adjusted operating profit increased 4.7 per cent to $179m with improvements in distribution and UPS Freight offset by declines in the Forwarding unit, where gains in North American air freight and ocean were offset by “challenges” in international air freight.
Chief financial officer Kurt Kuehn foresees “continuous improvement and advances in strategic initiatives that have great potential for the company" during 2015. "E-commerce growth, operations technology implementation, emerging market expansion and industry specific solutions will provide momentum for UPS.”

Hellmann Worldwide Logistics UK has been awarded authorised economic operator (AEO) status by HM Revenue & Customs.



The supply chain quality standard highlights businesses involved in the international supply chain.
The two-year process began in December 2012 and involved Hellmann training over 500 staff to complete the process and achieve its goal of becoming AEO certified.
HMRC inspected all areas of the business, offering recommendations for improvements, and making Hellmann UK the third country in the company’s global network to receive the accreditation.
Ian Dallow, security manager at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics UK, said: “Gaining the AEO status has been a lengthy process but something that has been extremely worthwhile. New procedures have been implemented and a more stringent security culture has been adopted to ensure the best service to our customers.
“AEO also provides us with additional business opportunities with major clients and a framework based on quality to help to drive the business forward.”

Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) preliminary figures for 2014 show an “encouraging revival” in cargo demand after three consecutive years of decline.
An upsurge in exports from manufacturing hubs in the region led to a rebound in international air cargo markets in 2014, with demand in freight tonne km (FTK) growing by a "solid" 5.4 per cent compared to the previous year.
Available freight capacity grew at a relatively modest pace of 4.1 per cent, resulting in a 0.8 percentage point increase in the average international freight load factor to 64.9 per cent.
Andrew Herdman, AAPA director general said: "Despite challenges, Asia Pacific airlines enjoyed a year of good growth in international passenger traffic in 2014.
“Air cargo markets experienced a welcome upswing in 2014, with the second half of the year registering 6.0 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2013, following several years of stagnant demand."
Herdman added: "The dramatic fall in oil prices since the end of the year has been welcomed by many airlines, although the resultant benefit in terms of improved profitability will vary depending on individual airline hedging policies and their degree of exposure to external debt, given the weaker Asian currencies."
Looking ahead, Herdman concluded: "Overall, the outlook for the coming year remains broadly positive, with sustained growth in the global economy continuing to drive air travel demand, whilst lower oil prices will also help to keep air travel affordable.
“However, airlines will need to closely monitor market movements, and align future capacity increases with the actual increase in demand, whilst seeking further operating efficiencies to restore margins to more sustainable levels."

TNT has launched a daily scheduled road service to Istanbul, linking the Turkish capital city to Sofia, Bulgaria, and on to all countries in Europe via the express company’s trucking network.
The Amsterdam-based parcels company says that it is currently the only express operator to run a scheduled road connection between all of Europe and Istanbul, “offering an economical and reliable alternative for less urgent shipments”.
Transit times from Istanbul to key European business centres vary from four to seven days, depending on distance to destination.
In Turkey, TNT operates a network comprising 26 hubs and depots, as well as a fleet of 328 vehicles, which connect Istanbul with other large cities, such as Ankara, Izmir, Adana and Bursa.
The new daily road service is an addition to TNT’s existing overnight air express service to Istanbul.

China will lift controls on prices of 24 commodities and services, said the National Development and Reform Commission on Sunday.
Market will decide the price of tobacco leaves, the last agricultural product to be freed from government price control, but a minimum price will be set to protect farmers, said a statement on the commission website.
Prices of railway bulk cargo, parcels and privately funded cargo and passenger transport will also be allowed to float. Railway passenger and cargo prices have been decided by the government, but lag far behind changes of road and water transportation prices, which has impeded the development of the railway sector, said Sun Zhang, a professor with Tongji University.
Prices of domestic air cargo will be freed, as well as prices of passenger transport of some airlines.
Wu Tongshui, deputy director of China Air Transport Association, said the move will help activate the market, attract more private investment and enhance the competitive edges of carriers.
Limits will be removed on port service fees, including fees on container loading, ship rubbish treatment and water supply.
Limits will be removed on factory prices of explosives for civil use.

The freighter plane may become a thing of the past if airlines failed to devise strategies to make their cargo operations more efficient, an aviation industry specialist has warned.

The industry needs a structural redesign, said Glyn Hughes, director of cargo industry management at International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Air cargo volumes have remained flat since 2010, he said during IATA’s annual general meeting.
IATA predicts cargo volumes will total about 52 million tons this year, effectively unchanged since 2010.

The $6.8 trillion worth of goods transported by air cargo every year represents 35 percent of international trade by value but only 0.5 percent of total volumes, Hughes pointed out.
He called for more drastic changes to shorten transport times and regain ground lost to the shipping industry.

Some carriers have already reduced the number of freighter planes they operate, he said.
Air freight built a reputation for getting bulky, expensive goods from A to B as quickly as possible. But as paperwork has increased, the average time it takes to shift a product from the manufacturer to the final importer stands at 6.5 days, compared with Lufthansa Cargo’s boast in the 1960s that the process took only three days.

High value goods such as electronics have also become smaller, meaning they take up less space and do not need dedicated freighters for transportation.

These trends are pushing companies such as AstraZeneca, Ericsson and Sony to transport more of their pharmaceuticals and electronics via sea at lower cost. In addition, growing demand for plane travel means more and more freight is being transported in the holds, or bellies, of passenger planes.
Airlines have so far reacted to the tough cargo market by cutting capacity and taking freighters out of service.

To remain competitive in the long term, airlines need to cut shipping times and position themselves as premium operators specializing in high value or perishable goods, such as flowers, or bulky over-sized goods, delegates said.

To boost competitiveness and revitalize trade growth, the industry is working toward a goal of reducing shipping times by 48 hours before 2020.
Of the 6.5 days on average it takes to get air freight from door to door, only a few hours are actually spent in the air, according to IATA.

It is therefore encouraging airlines to simplify procedures with freight forwarders and ground handlers, and to cut down the amount of paperwork it creates by moving to digital documents.
The association said that just 14.3 percent of contracts, known as airway bills, were in electronic form in 2013, short of its target of 22 percent for 2014.

Air freight traffic has grown at 5.3 per cent annually since 1980. Today goods worth $6.4 trillion travel by air — that’s 35 per cent of all world trade by value.
The growth rate is expected to be 4.9 per cent for the next 20 years. This means by the year 2023 traffic will double, according to V.K. Mathews, Executive Chairman of IBS Software, based in Technopark here.
Minimal profit
However, the profit margins are going to be nominal, Mathews said while speaking at the IBS Air Cargo Forum held at Istanbul in Turkey recently.
IBS Software is a leading provider of solutions to the travel, transport and logistics sectors.
Held every six months, the IBS Air Cargo Forum brings together leading cargo airlines where experts debate how advancements in technology can be leveraged to optimise cost of operations and improve yields.
Airlines have no control over their biggest cost element, fuel prices, Mathews said. Capacity utilisation was less than 50 per cent, leading to yield erosion.
“These statistics need to be kept in mind as we devise strategies on how we conduct business going forward,” he said.
Supply chain
“We need to move on and make the best of a demanding situation. For 90 per cent of the time in the supply chain, the cargo is just waiting to be moved. This is where efficiencies need to come in.”
A digitised shipper-to-consignee process has to become the standard to not only shorten the delivery time but also reduce unit cost, Mathews added.
The two-day conclave in Istanbul saw the unveiling of the iCargo portal by IBS Software, which would enable greater adoption of E-freight.
The first phase of the portal is expected to be complete by November and the second phase by the next financial year.
At least 70 experts representing airlines such as South African Airways, Qantas, Hawaiian Airlines, Lufthansa, All Nippon Airways, Nippon Cargo Airlines and Turkish Cargo, attended the event.
Istanbul as hub
They discussed key issues shaping the global air cargo industry and shared insights on strategies to address some of the critical challenges facing them.
Gary Hoyle of South African Airways was appointed the new Chairman of the IBS Cargo Forum.
Meanwhile, Temel Kotil, Chief Executive Officer, Turkish Airlines, said in his address Istanbul was ideally positioned to be the global connection point for air travel within 10 years.
While Europe’s traditional airports were struggling to add travellers as weak economies hurt demand, Istanbul was racing ahead with double-digit growth, thanks largely to the success of Turkish Airlines.
Kotil said Turkish Airlines was one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and well-placed to have 120 million passengers and 450 aircrafts by the year 2023.

Muscat, Sep 17 (ONA)--- Cargolux Company, one of the major air cargo carriers in Europe decided to increase its weekly flights to Muscat international Airport by two flights a week with effect from next October.

The company said that Oman Airport Management Company , represented by Commercial Operations Public Administration said in a statement today that Cargolux's decision to increase its weekly flights to Muscat International Airport comes at a time the shipping activity via Muscat International Airport has witnessed remarkable growth ( 8%). The total unloaded cargo during 12 months and up to last August amounted to 116,338 tons compared to 108,152 tons at the corresponding period last year.

The company will operate two flights weekly on Wednesday and Saturday from Luxemburg using B747-400 and B747-800 freighters. 

Cargolux started operating flights to Muscat international Airport on 22nd June 2013, with one flight weekly to meet the growth in the economic and investment activities witnessed by the Sultanate. The move comes in response to the growth of the shipping activity via Muscat International Airport and the remarkable growth in the number of passengers.

Lootah Group has signed an agreement with TNT Express, a leading global Express Company to supply locally produced environmentally superior and performance enhancing biodiesel made from used cooking oil for the latter's commercial vehicles in Dubai.

This agreement aims at reducing carbon footprints, and also supports Lootah Biofuels mission of converting 5% of transportation fuel to Biofuels by the year 2020.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Yousif Bin Saeed Al Lootah, CEO, Lootah Biofuels and Mr. Bryan Moulds, Manging Director Middle East and Sub Continent Associates, TNT Express. As per the agreement Lootah Biofuels will provide its high rich content biodiesel B5 to meet the needs of TNT's large fleet of commercial vehicles in Dubai.

The key benefits of this initiative include carbon foot print reduction as well as reduction of UCO waste. It is expected that the agreement will reduce carbon emissions by 18% per year. Through using B5, UCO is put into sustainable use as opposed to being discarded as waste, thereby impacting the environment negatively. This is a further step towards environmental sustainability.
